Vaccinating your puppy is one of the most important things you can do as a responsible pet parent. Here's the complete vaccination schedule recommended by veterinarians in India.
Core Vaccination Schedule
6-8 Weeks: First Vaccination
- DHPPi (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza)
- First deworming should be done simultaneously
10-12 Weeks: Second Vaccination
- DHPPi Booster (second dose)
- Continue deworming every 2 weeks until 3 months
14-16 Weeks: Third Vaccination
- DHPPi Booster (third dose)
- Anti-Rabies vaccine (IMPORTANT — this is often mandatory by law)
6 Months
- Kennel Cough (Bordetella) — recommended if your dog socializes with other dogs
1 Year
- Annual DHPPi booster
- Annual Rabies booster
- Deworming every 3 months from now on
Understanding Each Vaccine
Distemper
A highly contagious and often fatal viral disease. Symptoms include fever, coughing, vomiting, and neurological issues. There is no cure — prevention through vaccination is essential.
Parvovirus
Extremely dangerous for puppies. Causes severe vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and dehydration. Parvo is often fatal in unvaccinated puppies. The virus can survive on surfaces for months.
Hepatitis (Adenovirus)
Affects the liver and can cause serious illness. Symptoms include fever, lethargy, and eye inflammation. Vaccination provides excellent protection.
Rabies
A fatal disease that can be transmitted to humans. Rabies vaccination is legally required in most Indian states. This is non-negotiable.
Vaccination Tips
- Never skip or delay — the vaccination schedule exists for a reason. Gaps leave your puppy vulnerable.
- No outdoor walks until 1 week after the third vaccination. Your puppy's immune system isn't fully developed yet.
- Keep vaccination records — you'll need them for boarding, grooming, travel, and KCI registration.
- Only use a licensed vet — never vaccinate at home from unverified sources.
- Watch for reactions — mild lethargy for 24 hours after vaccination is normal. Severe swelling, vomiting, or difficulty breathing requires emergency vet attention.
